What to expect

The Stonewall Riots are an event of key importance in LGBT+ history: this is where the rocket fuel was lit for the gay rights movement. But the gay history of the Village goes back much farther than that. In fact, Greenwich Village was in many ways the first gayborhood.

On this fun and informative 2 hour tour, you will learn about the rich LGBT+ history of New York's most charming neighborhood, from Walt Whitman to Wigstock. You will see where the Village's LGBT+ people lived, loved, and played, including Oscar Wilde (yes, he too lived here for a while!), Eleanor Roosevelt, James Baldwin, Andy Warhol, Rita Mae Brown, Harvey Fierstein, and many more!

This tour costs $225 for up to 5 people and $40 for each additional person.

My passions

I am a retired Classics professor and a well-known historian of sexuality. I taught at NYU for a few years and fell in love with the Village and its LGBT history.

I have a PhD in Classics and have published widely on LGBT issues. Since retiring, I have founded the world's first gay history and art tour company, Oscar Wilde Tours. My tours have been covered in publications such as The Huffington Post, The Daily Beast, Out Magazine, Passport, Curve, and Queerty. And you can see a video of this tour on NBC4NY!
