"There is no "front desk". Everything is electronic, including getting in the main door, checking in and entering the room. If there's a problem, you text (or call) for service. My texts were answered promptly. The directory in the room says breakfast is included, but it's only coffee (powdered) or tea. No juice, cereal, yogurt, fruit, pastries or the like. Housekeeping is efficient and prompt. No problems with the shared bath and toilets. Try La Boulangerie down Hayes for a nice breakfast in a pleasant environment."

"Mithila Hotel's an old building, and it shows. That delights me though. Its a contributing factor to the Lower Nob Hill Apartment Hotel national historic district, which is a really cool feature if history is your thing. The staff were friendly and helpful. The hotel was clean, I'm paranoid about bed bugs and could find no trace of any. The washroom was pretty spotless as well. Something to note, the hotel doesn't feature air conditioning that I could find. A part of that is there is a ventilation shaft that opens into the washroom, which caused a few aromas to go into the washroom. The elevator is also small and very old but feels safe. I've ridden on newer elevators that felt more dangerous than this, I felt completely fine using it. The bed was fairly comfortable. Linens were clean and fresh and changed every 3 days. This suited me fine as I prefer not to have housekeeping come into my room every day. The room could have used an update. The washroom fixtures and furniture were pretty tired looking. They held up, but weren't much to look at, and the bed and bedside table showed a bit of water damage, and the chairs at the little table were quite old looking. The area is convenient, but didn't feel the most safe to me. I'm a sizable male presenting individual and felt that if it gets too late I wouldn't be the most comfortable walking alone with a backpack or other valuables. I heard a few incidences happen outside the hotel, likely spillover from the nearby Tenderloin. It's a fairly easy walk to the Van Ness BRT, cable cars, Muni metro and F Castro/Market trams, and the BART to get to any business or tourist things you want to access. It's fairly close to restaurants, stores, and cafes as well, and a short walk to the Union Square shopping district and Nob Hill."

The Ultimate Guide to Safe Gay Hotels and Gay-friendly Hotels in San Francisco

author
Written by Lachlan Probyn, a gay travel expert with misterb&b for 7 yearsMay 2, 2026

Twin Peaks Hotel is the most booked gay hotel in San Francisco on misterb&b - not by a little, but by a factor of nearly ten compared to the second-ranked property. The Castro, where it sits, is one of the most historically significant gay districts in the world. But the data tells a more specific story: September is the clear peak month, not June. The Folsom Street Fair in late September - the world's largest leather and fetish event - drives the single biggest booking surge of the year. Gay hotels in San Francisco are reserved an average of 41 days in advance. San Francisco is the #30 gay destination worldwide for gay hotel searches on misterb&b, with a host who chose to be here. Below, my three picks and the data behind them.

Best gay-friendly hotels in San Francisco - misterb&b community's choice 2026

Twin Peaks Hotel ★ 4.9

The most booked gay hotel in California on misterb&b - by a factor of nearly ten compared to any other SF property. Positioned at the top of the Castro, with the iconic view over the neighbourhood that has come to represent gay America. The community keeps returning to it year after year, and the data reflects that consistency.

Beck's Motor Lodge ★ 5.0

A Castro-area motor lodge with a perfect community rating - a California institution that has welcomed gay travelers for decades. Lower price point than Twin Peaks with the same Castro location advantage. The highest satisfaction rate of the three - every booking context results in a recommendation.

When to book - September beats June in the SF data

September is the clear peak - Folsom Street Fair (last Sunday of September) drives a larger booking surge than June Pride in the misterb&b data. Book 6-8 weeks ahead for Folsom and 4-6 weeks for June Pride. August is the second strongest month. January and February are the cheapest windows. Check the gay parties SF calendar for the circuit events that run year-round.

Castro vs SOMA vs Polk Street - which gay neighborhood to stay in

The Castro is where I send anyone on a first trip - Harvey Milk Plaza, the rainbow crosswalk, the bars, all within a few blocks. SOMA is for the traveler who wants proximity to Folsom Street Fair and the leather/fetish venues. Polk Street is the historic original gay strip, now more mixed but with its own community character.

Why LGBTQ+ travelers book their SF gay hotel on misterb&b

San Francisco is the #30 gay destination worldwide on misterb&b and California's #1. Twin Peaks Hotel alone has more confirmed bookings than any other gay hotel in California - a record that speaks to the Castro's enduring position in the LGBTQ+ traveler's imagination. The Folsom September surge, larger than June Pride in the data, reflects a segment of the community that specifically chooses SF for the leather and fetish calendar. This data is exclusive to misterb&b and is not available on any other platform. For the full destination picture, see the Gay Guide San Francisco. For the California desert alternative, gay hotels Palm Springs. For the US East Coast, gay hotels New York.

Booking here is part of something larger.

A share of every misterb&b reservation goes directly to LGBTQ+ NGOs - organizations funding legal defense, crisis support, and community spaces in places where being gay still carries a real cost. The hotel stay you book for your next San Francisco trip contributes to that. It matters where you book.
