As the eighth largest city in the USA, San Diego has a dynamic nightlife, and its gay scene is no exception to the rule. The main gay area of Santiago can be found in the charming Hillcrest district. Every year in July, Hillcrest is home to Santiago Gay Pride, which is one of the largest and most celebrated prides in the States. That said, even when Pride is not taking place, the area still hums with a colorful and welcoming energy.

Hillcrest is located just north of San Diego’s downtown and offers a wealth of gay bars, restaurants, shops, and clubs. The area is known for its pedestrian streets, open attitude, and main thoroughfares of University Avenue, Normal Street and Harvey Milk Street. For a bite to eat and a seriously good - and large - cocktail, be sure to stop by Baja Betty’s. This place has become a bit of an institution in the area, and is popular on a Saturday afternoon when gays flock to the outside terrace to people watch. PECS is also a popular hangout that hosts regular parties along with Drag Race viewing nights.

As an open-minded city, there is more than just one gay district in San Diego. While Hillcrest is the main pulse, gay life can also be found in South Park and Ocean Beach, which both offer various LGBTQ-owned and run businesses. The Gaslamp Quarter is also a popular choice for those who are looking for a more alternative gay scene in San Diego.
