Arpoador has everything you want, restaurants, shops and the famous beaches of Ipanema and Copacabana are only a few blocks away (4 and 3 blocks respectively). Jardim Botanico (botanical garden) is a short taxi drive away and next to it is wonderful Parque Lage, an old mansion set in a lush forest. From Parque Lage there is spectacular hike up to the Christ Statue through lush Atlantic rainforest I can highly recommend. Please check at the beginning of the hike trail how the safety situation is (there is a police booth) as there is a favela (slum) not too far away. The hike is about an hour uphill and is medium tough. A very small part has a chain where it gets a bit slippery and steep to pull yourself up. More hiking trails in other areas please ask.
