Redfern is located between the "gay bubble" of Surry Hills/Darlinghurst/Potts Point, and the "trendy hip" suburbs of Newtown and Erskineville. It's an easy walk, cycle, or train ride to most of the places you'll want to go.
The secure building is recently built and has lift access, and the balcony is huge and has an amazing view of the sunset every evening.

* Poof Doof is on each Saturday night at the Ivy, next to Wynyard station in the city.
