Nearby towns to visit …
One of the busier towns in the district, with an abundance of shops, restaurants and accommodation. This town boasts the honour of being the first dorp (town) in the Cape. The centre of a thriving farming community, Bredasdorp has much to offer - from farms that welcome visitors, arts and crafts through to the endangered Blue Crane and Bontebok. The Bredasdorp Shipwreck Museum is well worth a visit to read up on the rich local maritime history.
This tiny village, situated just a few kilometres outside Bredasdorp, boasts a very impressive Dutch Reformed Church due to an historical dispute which resulted in two churches being built within 15m of each other! Apart from beautiful farmlands and walks, this town is fast becoming a centre for arts and crafts
Renowned for its glorious 'never ending' sandy white beach and warm sea. The quaint harbour was built in 1859 and is today used by both fishing and ski boats. National monuments, fishing, bird life and watersports make this village a worthwhile visit. Fresh fish is available throughout the year.
The Southern-most tip of Africa! A visit to the Overberg is not complete without this destination. With about 250 shipwrecks this dramatically tragic coastline makes for some interesting history. The Cape Agulhas Lighthouse and Lighthouse Museum are both highlights of the visit, it is the second oldest working lighthouse in South Africa.
De Hoop Nature Reserve
This coastal nature reserve boasts 50km of conserved coastline and is one of the few marine reserves in the country. It is also the home of the endangered Bontebok, Cape Mountain Zebra, Cape Vulture and Blue crane. Visitors between June and December will have the privilege of watching the Southern Right Whales frolicking in the protected waters which they use as their annual breeding grounds. De Hoop also boasts a variety of birdlife, game, reptiles and fynbos.
Gate times for the De Hoop main gate are 07h00 to 18h00. This is strictly enforced, so ensure you plan your excursions accordingly. The coast is a marine reserve, and no organism, dead or alive, may be removed. Petrol and a small shop are available at Wydgeleë / Ouplaas (near De Hoop).
De Mond Nature Reserve
Vehicles are allowed only as far as the parking area, to minimise disturbance. Visitors are requested not to disturb nesting birds, and to keep to specified paths to avoid trampling vegetation. The reserve is open daily from 07:00 to 16:00.
The shortest walk is a two minute stroll to the harbour where you can watch the fishing boats come in. Next to the harbour you will find the historical 200 year old restored fishing village of Kassiesbaai, which welcomes strollers and photographers.
A must at low tide is the walk to the Waenhuiskrans caves. The walk is 1,5 kms along the road and cliff tops and a small walk down the dunes. This incredible tidal cave was carved out of the sandstone cliff, by the sea over centuries of time.
Longer walks will take you to Struis Point, Galjoengat and to the De Mond Nature Reserve. This is a most beautiful walk for the moderately fit. During the winter months from May to November, you can view the Southern Right Whales that come to mate and calve in the warm waters off Arniston
