I have been walking Canal Street since before it became what it is now, and there is no LGBT district in England that compares to it - not Soho in London, not Kemptown in Brighton. What makes the Canal Street Gay Village exceptional is not just its size (50+ bars in a few pedestrianised blocks) or its history (internationally famous thanks to Queer as Folk), but the fact that it remains a living, breathing neighbourhood rather than a tourist attraction. The community that built the Village is still here - in the bars, in the volunteer organisations, in the people who turn up on a Tuesday night simply because they belong here. Canal Street is the physical manifestation of Manchester's decades-long commitment to its LGBT community, and walking down it for the first time - rainbow flags overhead, music spilling from every door, the Rochdale Canal glinting alongside - remains one of the great experiences of gay travel in Europe. 🏳️🌈

The queer heart of Manchester is Canal Street - one of the most famous calle gays in the UK, running along the Rochdale Canal with bars, restaurants and clubs opening directly onto the waterfront. In summer, Canal Street becomes an open-air social space unlike anything else in the UK. Sackville Street extends the zone with Sackville Gardens, home to the Alan Turing memorial statue. Richmond Street has more of the community venues and late-night clubs.

Manchester's Gay Village developed along Canal Street from the 1980s, taking advantage of the affordable post-industrial warehouses and the canal-side location. The Village became internationally known when Russell T Davies set Queer as Folk there in 1999 - the Channel 4 series that brought realistic, unapologetic representations of gay male life to mainstream UK television for the first time. Manchester Orgullo in August is the largest Orgullo event in the UK outside London. Sackville Gardens contains a statue of Alan Turing, the mathematician who was persecuted for his homosexuality and posthumously pardoned in 2013.
