I had booked and paid an apartment with two rooms, since I had planned to invite some friends from overseas to stay with me. To my surprise it turned out yo be a homestay with one room available for me only. There was a misunderstanding on both sides and Hari Bonsalay was willing to give me the refund. Since I arrived in the late afternoon I decided to stay and think the situation over. However I immediately realized the kindness of Hari and his parents. I was served a delicious Kerala dinner and went to bed. The next day I inspected the site and I immediately had the impression that I chose the right place to spend my vacation. The Kalari martial arts training center is beautifully surrounded by coconut and a lot if other trees. That little brick building is Haris “temple” as he calls it. He is a master of Kalari and gives regularly training classes, especially to children. I also attended some classes and was impressed to see the devotion of the children. Hari is also a master therapist in Ayurvedic treatment and I had the chance to get the professional massages. Prior to my arrival I had an accident on my left leg. It was swollen and I could not properly walk but Hari tried everything to help me with massage and Ayurvedic treatments to relief my pain. He also went twice with me to a local hospital and to an IRM examination to further find the reason if my pain. He was so concerned and helpful. I was very happy to stay at this lovely place with Hari, being the perfect host supported by his family. His mother, Mini, is also a master of Kerala food. I enjoyed her local dishes very much. Unfortunately my pain in the leg got worse and after 3 sleepless nights Hari made an appointment at a Kochi hospital, organized the transport and a “bystander” ( in Kerala you need a person to stay with you at the hospital 24/24 that also stays in your room) I had to cut my vacation short and I was so sad to leave this lovely place with the charming and friendly people. I miss them all. I can only highly recommend this place for people who are openminded to stay with a family and also open to learn Kalari martial arts.
