O que esperar

Tour scenic historic Sapelo Island five miles off shore from the coast of Georgia between Savannah and Jacksonville. Ride the ferry to the Island while dolphins, sea gulls, and pelicans play in the wake.

On arrival on the Island, take an air conditioned rental van to your first stop at the University of Georgia Marine Institute in historic buildings constructed as a farm and tourist complex by multimillionaire R.J. Reynolds, including the unique turkey fountain dedicated to the first of his four wives and four divorces!

Next, stop at the former R.J. Reynolds Mansion, constructed in 1810 and restored by former owner multimillionaire Howard Coffin, the developer of the Cloister Hotel on Sea Island Georgia. Then drive to the scenic Sapelo Island Lighthouse, constructed in 1820, followed by beachcombing at unspoiled, undeveloped Nanny Goat Beach.

Finally, tour the Hog Hammock National Historic Area, home to the descendants of the Island's former slaves and haunted Behavior Cemetery.

As minhas paixões

I first visited Sapelo Island as a guest of the UGA Marine Institute in 1964, returning in 1969 for the dedication of the R.J. Reynolds Wildlife Management Area, where I met the fourth and last wife of R.J. Reynolds who sold the northern two-thirds of the Island to the State of Georgia under the supervision of the Georgia State Game and Fish Commission, of which I was the chief of information and education at the time.

After moving full time to the Georgia Coast in 1987, I began annually hunting deer on the Island archery hunts and fishing in the surf and saltwater streams on the Island with my best friend, who related many stories of the Island's past that he learned from the Island's descendants of former slaves, especially about R.J. Reynolds. Subsequently, my late wife worked on the Island for 12 years as the account of the UGA Marine Institute, where she gave me a daily report of the Island's many racy stories, many of which I pass on to my guests while conducting tours of the Island since 2005, along with the things that have taught me!

Os meus certificados

I am the former chief of information and edition of the Georgia State Game and Fish Commission, where I edited the monthly magazine Georgia Wildlife, with 40,000 subscribers throughout the state. I am the former assistant director of the Georgia Conservancy, public information officer of the U.S. Interior Department's Atlanta office of the Bureau of Outdoor Recreation, and executive director of the Georgia Wildlife Federation. I was named "Conservationist of the Year" by the National Wildlife Federation.

In addition, I have been a news reporter/feature writer/photographer for three newspapers, a TV station, and three radio stations.
