The neighbourhood I always go back to first in Miami is South Beach - specifically the stretch of Ocean Drive and Washington Avenue that has been a gay resort community since the 1970s, when Art Deco hotels were being bought and restored by LGBTQ+ entrepreneurs at a time when the neighbourhood was affordable and largely overlooked. Palace Bar on Ocean Drive is the one I always come back to - the drag brunch on the oceanfront terrace is one of the most purely enjoyable things you can do in LGBTQ+ Miami, before the parade or any other time.

Miami Beach Pride - why April makes it unique

Miami Beach Pride deliberately runs in April rather than June - a decision that reflects the city's climate (April is warm and clear; June is hurricane season pre-season and extremely hot) and its position as a winter/spring destination. This makes it one of the major US Prides that does not cluster around the June 28 Stonewall anniversary, which gives it a different energy: more relaxed, more resort-focused, less politically charged than the commemorative energy of late June. The theme this year - Pride is infinite - emphasises continuity and resilience.

The 12th Street Beach and outdoor LGBTQ+ Miami

One of the things I always do during Miami Beach Pride is spend at least one morning at 12th Street Beach - the designated gay section of Miami Beach's public beach, a few blocks from the parade route. During Pride weekend it fills up with the entire LGBTQ+ community of South Beach and visiting travellers from across Latin America and Europe. It is a genuinely extraordinary space - one of the few places where the intersection of beach culture, LGBTQ+ community and Miami's Latin character all happen at once.

The history of Miami Beach Gay Pride - 18 years on Ocean Drive

Miami Beach Pride is a relatively young event by US standards - it launched in 2009, making 2026 its 18th anniversary. What it lacked in historical depth it compensated for with geography: no other major Pride parade runs down an oceanfront Art Deco boulevard in April warmth. South Beach had been a significant LGBTQ+ destination since the 1970s gay reclamation of the neighbourhood, but it did not have its own organized Pride until the late 2000s. The event has grown rapidly, drawing participants from across Latin America and making Miami Beach one of the major LGBTQ+ travel destinations in the Western Hemisphere.
