Gay Palermo is the main city on Italy’s dreamy island of Sicily, and makes for a great gay destination anytime of year. Come summer, soak up plenty of vitamin D on one of the island’s gay beaches, and come winter, recharge with some dreamy comfort food in a  traditional trattoria. The gay scene in Palermo is also surprisingly active, with a series of different gay bars scattered in the Monte di Pietá district.

Palermo is best known for its food, specifically its street food. Head to any of the open-air markets that cover the town to encounter some of the best meals you’ve ever had. At night, attend one of the many queer events hosted at I Candelai. Even better, come for Pride. Palermo Pride is a summer-long event that kicks off with the Sicilian Queer Film Festival in May or June of every year. Palermo Pride doesn’t stop until August. Including the signature parade and plush parties, Pride in Sicily includes a range of ways to celebrate being gay Palermo.

If partying on the beach gets to be too much and you are looking for some time in meditative reflection, head to one of the many palazzi. Filled with incredible paintings and ancient architecture, centuries-old buildings like the Palazzo Comitini, Palazzo Sant’Elia, Palazzo delle Ferrovie and Palazzo Jung envelop you in history. Walking tours to these palazzi and other notable locations are readily available for those ready to bring some movement back into their lives after a few days lounging on the beach with glasses of Grillo.
