Cosa aspettarsi

Sapelo Island GA USA is an island five miles offshore from Darien, GA USA that is only accessible by state ferry to employees or guests of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, the University of Georgia's Sapelo Island Marine Institute, Island property owners, or guests of an authorized Island guide. My tour includes 4,5000 years of native American habitation, over 100 years as a Spanish missionary site, over 100 years under English rule, and over 240 years of rule under the United States, when it was owned by three multimillionaires before being purchased by the State of Georgia as a wildlife refuge, National Estuarine Area, and a small settlement of a handful of descendants of slaves from the Island's plantation area.

Le mie passioni

I first visited the Island in 1965 as a guest of the University of Georgia's Sapelo Island Marine Institute. Since 1987, I have hunted and fished the Island on a regular basis as a member of a hunting and fishing club lodge and as a guest of Islanders in the small Hog Hammock Community of mostly slave descendants. My late wife worked on the Island for the Marine Institute for 12 years, and I began giving historic and nature tours of the Island in 1995. I have made a study of all of the many history books about Sapelo Island and it's most famous owners that I can find, combined with personal knowledge gained from Islanders and my late wife. Sapelo has a fascinating history. It is a beautiful Island with miles of unspoiled, undeveloped beaches, miles of beautiful woods of Spanish moss draped live oaks with white tail deer, wild hogs, wild cows, alligators, and many other species.
