While gay life in Rome has become much more open and prevalent in recent time, the city’s gay district is still relatively small. Despite being a capital city, you will not find a scene as robust or active as that in other European capitals such as London, Berlin, or Paris. Nevertheless, most gay life can be found on Via San Giovanni in Laterano, which is affectionately referred to as the ‘gay street’.
Positioned right beside the eastern side of the Colosseum, views don’t get much better than this. Plus the boys who populate this street each night are also easy on the eye! During the evening throughout the warmer months, expect to see the street full of people drinking, chatting, and making new friends. Most bars along the strip also serve their drinks in plastic cups, meaning you can spend your entire evening outside.
The most popular gay bar on this street is Coming Out, and with a name like this, it only makes sense that the clientele and staff are more than out and proud. Expect top hits along with a varied drinks menu. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner is served here, so stop by at any point of the day. My Bar is the neighboring bar, and regularly hosts karaoke evenings. It is open throughout the day, and also serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
While ‘gay street’ may be the hub of gay life in Rome, there are several gay clubs, bars, and special events throughout the city. Check out our listings pages for more information on these.Per saperne di più
