La Raitrie beach

La Raitrie Beach is one of the favorite seaside escapes of gay men from Nantes and the surrounding region. Located near La Plaine-sur-Mer, between Pornic and Préfailles, it takes approximately one hour to reach by car from Nantes. Far removed from the polished atmosphere of a traditional seaside resort, La Raitrie is a wild and discreet collection of small naturist coves nestled beneath cliffs along the Loire-Atlantique coast. There are no beach clubs, organized rows of sun loungers or busy waterfront cafés here. Visitors come for the peaceful setting, the freedom of naturism, the Atlantic air and the distinctly local gay atmosphere.

La Raitrie is also known as a gay meeting and cruising spot. Gay men usually gather in the more secluded coves and around the rocky platform on the right-hand side of the beach, towards Port aux Goths. The atmosphere is generally relaxed and discreet, especially on warm summer afternoons. However, this remains an open public beach rather than a private cruising venue. Naturism does not imply consent, and intimate behavior should remain away from other beachgoers and public view. Respecting personal boundaries, the environment and the privacy of everyone present is essential.

The beach is strongly affected by the tides. At low tide, small stretches of sand and large rocky areas appear, offering several places where visitors can settle down. At high tide, the usable beach becomes much narrower, and some coves may almost entirely disappear beneath the water. Checking the local tide timetable before leaving is therefore essential. Arriving without doing so could mean finding very little space—or no accessible beach at all. The seabed is rocky, the Atlantic conditions can change quickly and swimming is not supervised. Water shoes can be useful, and swimmers should remain cautious even when the sea initially looks calm.

Access is one of the most important things to know before visiting. Several paths descend from the parking areas towards the shore, but the entrance is very steep, uneven and sometimes slippery. Suitable walking shoes are strongly recommended, particularly after rain. Flip-flops are best kept inside your bag until you reach the beach. The site is unfortunately unsuitable for people with limited mobility, and carrying bulky beach furniture down the cliff path is not advisable. A light backpack containing water, sunscreen, food and a towel is the most practical option.

From Nantes, take the D13 towards Préfailles. At the final roundabout before La Plaine-sur-Mer, turn sharply left and continue towards Préfailles on the D313. At the following roundabout, turn left onto the D751 towards Sainte-Marie-sur-Mer and Pornic via the coastal road. After a few hundred metres, turn right onto the road leading to the hamlet of La Raitrie. Parking areas are signposted, and several paths lead towards the coves. A coastal path also follows the beach from the top of the cliffs, providing beautiful views over the Atlantic. Stay away from the cliff edges and use only the established trails.

Naturism is generally accepted in the coves and on the rocky platform to the right, towards Port aux Goths. Facilities are extremely limited, so bring everything you need and take all rubbish away with you. La Raitrie will not suit travelers looking for easy access, lifeguards and resort-style services. For gay visitors who enjoy hidden coves, naturist freedom, authentic local meeting places and a touch of adventure, however, it remains one of the most distinctive gay beaches near Nantes.
