I have spent parts of several summers in Stockholm and it remains a city I find difficult to leave. The Swedish approach to LGBTQ+ life is instructive: equality here is not a debate but a settled matter, and Stockholm Pride, held every August, is one of the largest and most well-organised Pride events in Europe, drawing half a million people to a city of fewer than a million. The Sodermalm neighbourhood is the informal centre of queer Stockholm - gay bars, independent cinemas, a creative community that has made the south island the most interesting part of the city for at least two decades. What I keep coming back to in Stockholm is the relationship between the city and the water: no neighbourhood is far from a bridge or a waterway, and in summer the light lasts so long that evenings turn into mornings without anyone noticing. The gay scene here is unpretentious in the best Scandinavian way. For LGBTQ+ verified accommodation, misterb&b Stockholm is reliable. 🏳️‍🌈 What I find most significant about the gay scene in Stockholm is how it has evolved beyond the traditional bar circuit: the LGBTQ+ community here is as likely to organise around outdoor swimming, cycling, hiking clubs, and cultural events as around nightlife, which reflects the broader Swedish relationship to leisure and the outdoors. The archipelago - the 30,000 islands accessible by ferry from the city centre - creates a summer culture of boats, outdoor swimming, and island-hopping that the gay community participates in as a matter of course. Stockholm Pride also has one of the best pride parks in the world, a multi-day cultural programme that runs parallel to the parade.
