Situated 50km from the city, it might seem a bummer to take a train, a taxi ride and a ferry to get to Fire Island, but it's totally worth it. It's been a staple for the NYC community since 1930s.

After the decadent phase it went through during the 1980s as a gay cruising area, Christopher Street Pier has become a staple of the local gay community. Although not strictly a beach, it's great for hanging out with a beer and some deli food and overlooking the bay.
