Las Vegas is unlike anywhere else I have been, which is either a recommendation or a warning depending on what you are looking for. The gay community here is larger and more geographically dispersed than the Strip-focused tourist experience would suggest: the Arts District near downtown, the Fruit Loop neighbourhood around Paradise Road and Harmon Avenue, and a residential gay community in the suburbs that has developed over the past thirty years. What I find most interesting about gay Las Vegas is its relationship to the entertainment industry that dominates the city - there is a long history of LGBTQ+ performers and production workers here, visible in the cabaret shows that have always been more gender-fluid and gay-adjacent than the mainstream tourist marketing acknowledges. The legal landscape in Nevada is straightforwardly supportive of same-sex couples. The pool culture, the 24-hour infrastructure, the desert landscape at the edge of everything: Las Vegas operates by its own rules. Vegas Pride in October draws a growing crowd.
