I have been to gay Tel Aviv twice and both times left with the same feeling: that this city exists in defiance of everything around it, and that defiance is the source of its particular energy. The White City - the UNESCO-listed collection of Bauhaus buildings that gives Tel Aviv its architectural identity - is the backdrop for one of the most openly gay cultures in the world, in a region where this is not to be taken for granted. The beach scene in summer is extraordinary: the gay sections of the Tel Aviv beachfront are among the most social and celebratory LGBTQ+ spaces I have encountered. The bars and clubs in the Florentin neighbourhood and along Rothschild Boulevard operate late, operate loudly, and operate with a confidence that comes from a city that has decided where it stands.
