Athens is not only the capital of Greece, but it's also the capital of Gay Greece. This charming city has the biggest concentration of gay bars in the country, and is home to a dynamic gay population; so much so that Athens is a reference destination for gay travelers. That said, the gay culture is not quite as out and proud as that which can be found in other capital cities throughout Europe. Athens is still strongly subjected to the authority of the Greek Orthodox Church and its influence on the local population. Greece is still not entirely ready for a total liberalization of its customs, and many Greek people still face pressure from their families.

However, in recent time Athens has shown an exemplary initiative of tolerance towards the homosexual community, and it is starting to align itself with the current tendency followed by many other European countries. This encouraging initiative is transforming Athens into a modern and committed city, and this is strongly marked by an increasing number of pressure groups that are defending gay rights.

While Athens does not really have an identified gay district, there are still several gay bars and clubs throughout the city to keep you entertained. You just need to know where to look. That said, Gazi is a good place to start. The capital has its own Gay Pride at the end of May/beginning of June, where the city comes alive with plenty of festivities.
