For a warm weather vacation near crystal blue Atlantic waters, it's hard to beat gay Fort Lauderdale. The city on the sea has one of the most heavily populated LGBTQ communities in the States and welcomes visitors from around the world with open arms. If you choose to venture to this tropical vacation town in south Florida, you’ll find plenty of hotels, restaurants, beaches and nightlife that cater specifically to the gay community.
Deciding where to stay while visiting is easy. Suntanners and ocean swimmers will be happiest on the famous Fort Lauderdale beach, where many all-male guest houses and resorts are situated. Conveniently, most of them are also within walking distance of one of the most popular gay beaches in south Florida, Sebastian Beach. But for those looking to be closer to nightlife and one of the larger gayborhoods, look no further than the historic Wilton Manors.
Many visitors fly in from around the country and use gay Fort Lauderdale as their launching point for gay cruises (the most popular being Atlantis). Countless cruise passengers choose to lengthen their trips by adding a one or two day stay in the area before and afterwards.
Fort Lauderdale maintains a lively atmosphere year round but burns brightest during one of its two - yes, two - gay pride festivals. The first festival is Wilton Manors Stonewall Festival. This popular event takes place in June and includes a fabulous parade down Wilton Drive.
The second festival is Pride Fort Lauderdale and is held in February, perfect for winter birds looking to escape the cold. The event also includes the MiFo Fort Lauderdale Gay & Lesbian Film Festival.
And if you love Halloween debauchery, try not to miss Wicked Manors, the annual Halloween celebration in gay Fort Lauderdale. It’s an absolute scream and draws more than 30,000 costumed revelers each year!
