Mexico City is the largest metropolitan area in North America and the gay community here has a scale and a complexity that reflects that: the Zona Rosa neighbourhood has been the traditional centre of gay life in the capital since the 1970s, but the scene has expanded across multiple colonias - Condesa, Roma, Polanco - in ways that reflect the city's growth and the changing preferences of a community large enough to sustain multiple different environments simultaneously. Mexico City legalised same-sex marriage in 2009, becoming the first jurisdiction in Latin America to do so, and that legal framework has made it a destination for same-sex couples from across Mexico and the region. Mexico City Pride in June is among the largest in Latin America, drawing millions of participants. The altitude at 2,240 metres takes adjustment. The food - tacos al pastor, pozole, the mole negro at a proper fondita - is as extraordinary as the reputation. Cafe la habana around 5pm to warm up and have a drink, then 7:30 at el marra downtown to see drag and wild go-go dancers, 10:30pm at la puri to feel the true gay center of Mexico City in a place with religious theming done sarcastically, at midnight head to divina on garibalid to close out with a club that goes till very late or move to juarez to estereo if you like pop and pretty people. At 2am you go to vilsito for some tacos. Saturday. brunch at mercado roma, some museum and sic"
