Gay Guide Hamburg

Hamburg Gay Pride: July 25 - August 02, 2026
Written by
May 19 2026

St Georg, the neighbourhood around the Lange Reihe and the Hansaplatz in Hamburg, has been the centre of the city's gay life since the postwar years - the bars here have operated continuously for decades in a neighbourhood that also functions as the city's immigrant quarter, giving it a cultural mix distinct from the more homogeneous gay districts of Frankfurt or Munich. Gay Hamburg has a leather and bear tradition that connects to the city's maritime history and blue-collar culture: the Eagle, the Chaps, and the long-running leather venues along the Gerhart-Hauptmann-Platz are part of a circuit with international recognition. Hamburg also has one of Germany's strongest queer arts scenes, anchored by the Hamburg Pride (CSD Hamburg) in August. The city's status as Germany's media capital gives the LGBTQ+ community here a visibility in publishing and broadcasting that shapes national culture. 🏳️‍🌈 Hamburg Pride, held in August, is the second largest LGBTQ+ event in Germany after Cologne's CSD, and the parade route through the St Georg and city centre neighbourhoods reflects the scale of a community that has been organising here for decades. What I find most distinctive about gay Hamburg compared to Berlin is the maritime quality: this is a working port city, and the relationship between the sea, the Elbe, the canals, and the city centre gives Hamburg a physical character that informs its social culture. The Reeperbahn, Hamburg's famous entertainment district in St Pauli, has a complex relationship with gay culture - historically separate from the St Georg scene but increasingly overlapping as the areas have grown toward each other. The harbour promenade at night, the Speicherstadt warehouse district, the Elbphilharmonie: Hamburg gives you beauty in unexpected places. For LGBTQ+ verified accommodation, misterb&b Hamburg is the definitive starting point.

"My perfect gay weekend in Hamburg starts with a walk around the Alster or through Stadtpark, followed by drinks in St. Georg, the city's LGBTQ+ neighborhood. On Saturdays, I enjoy parties like Queeriental, PINK INC., Babylon, or DARE, depending on my mood. They all offer great music, a friendly crowd, and a fun atmosphere. What I love most about Hamburg is the mix of relaxed daytime vibes and exciting queer nightlife 🌈"

"For a weekend in Hamburg, I would first visit the Elbphilharmonie. Then take a stroll in the HafenCity and visit the new large shopping center "Westfield". The city center with its numerous shops is also great for shopping. The party mile "Reeperbahn" is a must-see. You can also find the "Bunker" there, which you can climb for free. Our church "Der Michel" is also worth a visit. Don't forget the gay street Lange Reihe ;)"

"Hamburg's Landungsbrücken and Elbphilharmonie, very often out and about on Lange Reihe in the scene district's restaurants and bars, Hamburg's city center ideal for strolls and shopping"
