TOM’S Saloon

-
Pulverteich 17, 20099, Hamburg, Germany

In the basement of a residential building on Pulverteich, just steps from Hamburg's main train station, Toms (formerly known as Toms Saloon) has been the beating heart of the city's leather and fetish scene since 1974. Named after Tom of Finland, who was once a regular here himself, the bar still keeps his artwork on the walls, a direct line back to gay culture's most iconic illustrator, still watching over the room after half a century.

Walk in and you land at a wooden bar under diffuse light, all rustic textures and Tom of Finland sketches setting the tone before you've even ordered a drink. From there, the space opens into a middle room dominated by an oversized cable drum, a signature quirk that regulars point to as pure Toms character. This is a men-only venue, ID required, over-18 strictly enforced, and the drinks list runs from beer to longdrinks with a solid spirits selection alongside.

The darkroom is what built Toms' reputation, and it remains the draw for plenty of visitors. After a major renovation, it's evolved past pure darkness into a mix of dimmer and slightly brighter play areas, giving the space more range than the classic pitch-black cruising labyrinth of decades past. Regular theme nights, Beer Night, Fetish Night, Longdrink Night, and the recurring NEON KINKY parties, keep the calendar varied, and resident DJs take over from around 11pm on the busiest nights, running until dawn on weekends.

Fifty years in, Toms has earned landmark status in Hamburg's gay scene, and that history shows in the mixed-age crowd, everyone from leather veterans who remember the original opening to younger visitors drawn in by the legend. Some regulars note the fetish dress code has relaxed over the years, don't expect a strict leather-only room every night, but the bones of what made this place iconic are still very much intact.

Practical tip from your misterb&b crew: Toms sits in St. Georg, Hamburg's central gay district, an easy walk from the Hauptbahnhof and close to other neighborhood staples like Dragon Sauna and the M&V gay bar. Weekend nights get busy fast, especially during themed events like Hamburg Fetish Weekend, so plan to arrive on the earlier side if you want room to actually move through the space.

St. Georg has anchored Hamburg's queer life for decades, and Toms is one of its true landmarks. Booking with a local gay host through misterb&b means arriving with someone who already knows the neighborhood's rhythm, when Toms gets going, what's worth pairing it with, and how St. Georg's history shapes the scene you're stepping into.
