After the decadent phase it went through during the 1980s as a gay cruising area, Christopher Street Pier has become a staple of the local gay community. Although not strictly a beach, it's great for hanging out with a beer and some deli food and overlooking the bay. Close enough to Greenwich Village yet far enough to make you think NYC can be a quiet place!
