Mälarpaviljongen: Stockholm’s iconic LGBTQ+ summer oasis by the water

Mälarpaviljongen is a seasonal waterfront restaurant and bar located at Norr Mälarstrand 64, on the southern shore of Kungsholmen in central Stockholm. Spread across a leafy garden, a pier and floating barges overlooking Riddarfjärden, it has become one of the Swedish capital’s most iconic summer meeting places. Rainbow flags fly proudly above the terraces, flowers fill the garden and chilled glasses of rosé appear almost compulsory whenever the sun decides to cooperate. In a city famous for making the most of its brief summer, few addresses do it quite as beautifully.

The venue has been run by Arto Winter and Anders Karlsson since 2004 and has developed a strong, outspoken LGBTQ+ identity. However, Mälarpaviljongen is not an exclusively gay restaurant or men-only bar. Its crowd is famously diverse, bringing together gay men, other members of the LGBTQ+ community, local residents, families, couples, colleagues and international visitors. On sunny afternoons, the atmosphere can feel relaxed and almost picnic-like; later in the day, the bar becomes livelier as groups gather for drinks and music beside the water.

For gay travelers, Mälarpaviljongen offers something particularly valuable: a highly visible queer-friendly space where there is no need to retreat indoors or wait until nightlife begins. You can arrive for lunch, meet friends over a bottle of wine, flirt discreetly across the terrace or simply enjoy Stockholm looking effortlessly handsome in the evening light. The rainbow presence is genuine and longstanding, but nobody needs to perform a particular identity to belong here. It is inclusive in the best sense—proudly queer without closing the door on anyone who shares its values.

The menu typically combines Swedish and international summer favorites. Fish dishes, grilled meats, burgers and lighter options have all featured, alongside cocktails, beer, coffee, wine and the venue’s own rosé and white wines. Exact dishes and prices can change during the season, so the current menu should be checked before visiting. Guests generally come as much for the setting and social atmosphere as for the food. This is waterfront Stockholm, after all: the view is not technically listed as a side dish, but it certainly does plenty of work.

Mälarpaviljongen also has a meaningful connection to LGBTQ+ activism. Arto Winter helped establish Regnbågsfonden, the Rainbow Foundation, which supports LGBTQ+ rights and organizations in countries where queer people face discrimination, violence or persecution. Part of the proceeds from selected house wines has traditionally supported the foundation. This gives the venue a purpose extending beyond rainbow decoration: its visibility is connected to practical solidarity with LGBTQ+ communities internationally.

Music, DJs and special events may take place during the summer, with the atmosphere becoming especially festive around Stockholm Pride. Nevertheless, Mälarpaviljongen should not be mistaken for a nightclub or cruising venue. There is no dance floor guaranteeing a wild night, and the experience varies greatly according to the weather, time and scheduled program. Check the venue’s social media if you are hoping for a particular event.

The restaurant usually operates from early April until late September and closes during the colder months. Opening hours may also depend on the season and weather. On warm days, especially at weekends and during Pride, it can become extremely busy, so arriving early is sensible.

Mälarpaviljongen is ultimately one of those places that captures Stockholm at its most seductive: open water, long summer evenings, greenery, good music and a crowd gathered beneath rainbow flags. Come for lunch or rosé, stay for sunset, and enjoy a queer Stockholm institution that proves activism and fabulous waterfront drinking can make a very attractive couple.
