Plage de Trézien

Plage de Trézien, also known as Plage des Charrettes and sometimes associated with the name Ruscumunoc, is a wild stretch of coastline in Plouarzel, northwest of Brest. Facing the Iroise Sea, it is divided into several sandy coves framed by steep, dramatically sculpted cliffs. The setting feels wonderfully remote, with open views towards the Molène archipelago and, in clear weather, Ouessant. This is not a groomed resort beach with rows of parasols, cocktails and background music. It is raw Brittany: fine sand, rocks, wind, changing light and an ocean that expects visitors to pay attention.

The northern section of the beach is traditionally known as a naturist area and attracts a significant number of gay men during warm, sunny days. However, this distinction needs to be understood properly. Trézien is not an exclusively gay beach, and naturism is tolerated rather than compulsory throughout the entire site. The main cove receives a mixed crowd, while naturists generally continue towards the more secluded northern coves. Gay visitors can feel comfortable here, particularly in summer, but should not expect a private LGBTQ+ enclave or an organized gay venue. The beach remains a shared natural space where discretion, consent and respect for every visitor are essential.

Access is part of the adventure, although it should never become an improvised climbing competition. From the Trézien area, follow the direction of Ruscumunoc and the Pointe de Corsen coastline. A parking area above the beach provides access to a long staircase descending towards the main cove. This official route is considerably safer than attempting to scramble down the cliff. Once on the sand, turn right to reach the northern coves. The passage is normally possible only around low tide, because the rising sea can cover the sand between the rocky sections and leave visitors cut off.

Checking the tide timetable before leaving is therefore essential, not an optional detail to remember once your towel is already surrounded by water. Plan enough time to return to the staircase well before high tide. The Atlantic environment can change quickly, and waves, currents, slippery rocks and falling material from the cliffs all require caution. Avoid sitting directly beneath unstable cliff faces, do not enter the water when conditions look rough and never assume that a calm-looking sea is harmless. Mobile reception may also be inconsistent in secluded coves.

Facilities are very limited. Visitors should bring drinking water, food, sun protection, suitable footwear and a bag for taking all rubbish home. A windbreak can be more useful than a parasol on a typical Breton day. Swimming shoes may help around rocky areas, but sturdy shoes are preferable for the approach. There is little or no shade, and the breeze can make the sun feel less intense than it really is. Swimming may be pleasant in calm conditions, although the water remains refreshingly Atlantic rather than Mediterranean-bath warm.

The beach is most appealing to travelers who appreciate untamed landscapes, naturism and quiet community encounters. It is less appropriate for anyone needing step-free access, lifeguard supervision, beach services or guaranteed swimming conditions. Families and textile beachgoers may also use the surrounding coves, so nudity should remain within the traditionally tolerated northern section.

Plage de Trézien offers gay travelers one of the most striking coastal escapes near Brest: discreet, beautiful and refreshingly free of commercial clutter. Arrive around low tide, use the staircase, respect other beach users and keep one eye on the ocean. Here, the sea controls the schedule—and unlike your holiday group chat, it does not negotiate.
