Zum Schwejk is the oldest gay bar still standing in Frankfurt, a cornerstone of the city's scene since 1987 and an institution of the "old" gay Frankfurt just north of Konstablerwache. Charming, rustic and down-to-earth, it's famous for its imaginative decor, lovingly redecorated for every season and festival, disco balls scattered across the walls, and a warm, cordial atmosphere where regulars, tourists, women's groups and cute guys all pile in. The soundtrack is pure fun: German Schlager and singalong hits; the crowd is lively, sociable, and predominantly male (skewing a little older); and the local Äppelwoi (apple wine) is the drink to order. There's street-side outdoor seating in summer, themed parties and daily specials keep the locals coming back, and admission is always free. One tip for visitors: on your first order, you're handed a tab card that all your drinks go on; hang onto it and pay when you leave, or risk a hefty minimum charge.
