Kastro Bar

-
Paraportiani Little Venice, 84600, Mykonos, Greece

Kastro’s Restaurant & Bar is a historic waterfront venue located at Agion Anargyron 1 in Little Venice, one of the most photographed neighborhoods of Mykonos Town. Once famous as Kastro Bar and closely associated with the island’s early gay nightlife, it has evolved into an elegant contemporary Greek restaurant and cocktail bar. The venue is still warmly welcoming to LGBTQ+ travelers and remains popular with gay couples, but it should no longer be described as a dedicated gay bar. Think romantic dinner with a fabulous Aegean view rather than a crowded night of dancing with your shirt mysteriously disappearing.

Kastro’s has been part of Mykonos life since 1976. Its long history gives it a special place in the island’s queer travel story: decades ago, when openly gay venues were far less common, Kastro Bar became a discreet and welcoming meeting point for international gay visitors. Today, its identity is more sophisticated and gastronomic, but the relaxed, cosmopolitan spirit that made the address famous has not entirely disappeared.

The setting is the venue’s greatest attraction. Kastro’s occupies a traditional whitewashed building directly beside the sea, close to the Church of Panagia Paraportiani. A small number of tables are positioned beside narrow openings overlooking the water, creating one of the most intimate dining experiences in Mykonos. Waves can crash dramatically beneath the windows while the sun sets across the Aegean. These coveted seats are limited, so making a reservation well in advance is strongly recommended, especially during July and August. Even without a waterside table, the Cycladic interior provides an elegant and romantic atmosphere.

The menu focuses on refined Greek and Mediterranean cuisine, combining local ingredients with contemporary presentation. Depending on the current seasonal menu, guests may find seafood, octopus, risotto, meat dishes, creative starters and polished desserts. Kastro’s is better suited to a complete lunch or dinner than to an inexpensive snack. Mykonos is not known for modest prices, and this prestigious Little Venice location comes with a suitably glamorous bill.

Cocktails, wine and coffee are also available, making the venue a pleasant choice for an early-evening drink. However, visitors looking for a conventional gay bar, a dance floor, drag performances or late-night cruising should continue afterwards to Mykonos Town’s current LGBTQ+ nightlife venues. Kastro’s works particularly well as the sophisticated first chapter of an evening before the music becomes louder and everyone’s good intentions about having an early night disappear.

The clientele is international, stylish and mixed. Couples celebrating a romantic occasion are common, alongside groups of friends and travelers attracted by the restaurant’s reputation and views. Gay visitors should feel entirely comfortable, but the establishment is now mainstream rather than community-exclusive.

Kastro’s operates primarily during the Mykonos tourist season, generally from spring through autumn. Opening dates, hours and menus may change, so consult the official website and reserve before visiting.

Come to Kastro’s for its history, contemporary Greek cuisine and exceptional waterfront setting. It may no longer be the legendary gay bar remembered by veteran Mykonos travelers, but it remains a beautiful place for two men to share dinner, cocktails and a sunset worthy of its own dramatic entrance.
