Located at Elandsstraat 119 in Amsterdam’s picturesque Jordaan district, Café Saarein is far more than another stop on the city’s LGBTQ+ nightlife circuit. It is a historic feminist and queer meeting place, an old-fashioned Amsterdam “brown café” and one of the increasingly rare venues where community matters more than spectacle. With its dark wood, intimate tables, pool table and pleasantly unpolished atmosphere, Saarein offers a welcome alternative to the busier gay bars and dance clubs around Reguliersdwarsstraat and the Zeedijk.

The café’s story began in 1978, when a collective of ten women took over the existing neighborhood bar. Its name reportedly came from the previous owners, Saar and Rein, but the new team transformed it into a women-centered feminist space. In 1999, the café entered a new chapter and adopted a more inclusive door policy. Today, it describes itself as a queer café and historic brown bar offering an inclusive meeting place for women and the wider LGBTQIA+ community.

That distinction matters. Saarein welcomes gay men, but it remains primarily rooted in lesbian, feminist and FLINTA culture. Male visitors should approach it as guests in a space created to give women and gender-diverse queer people room to meet safely. Arriving with respect, reading the atmosphere and avoiding behavior that takes over the room should be obvious rules. If you are looking for a male-only cruising venue, a large dance floor or a conventional gay bar packed with shirtless men, this is not the place. If you appreciate queer history, conversation and community-led spaces, however, Saarein deserves your attention.

The atmosphere is relaxed and sociable rather than flashy. You can order a beer, wine or mixed drink, settle into a corner and talk without competing with the volume of a giant sound system. The pool table provides a natural way to meet people, although confidence around a cue is not mandatory. Regulars, local activists, international visitors and different generations of queer Amsterdam all cross paths here. Some evenings feel calm and neighborly, while programmed events can make the compact café considerably livelier.

Saarein hosts a changing selection of community gatherings, networking drinks, book-related events, games and other queer initiatives. Upcoming events are generally announced through the café’s official Instagram account and calendar. Because the program changes, it is worth checking before visiting. You may find a quiet afternoon drink, a busy community event or an evening in which the pool competition becomes unexpectedly serious.

Food is not the main reason to visit, but snacks are available, including plant-based choices. The café has long been associated with vegan-friendly food, reinforcing its alternative and socially conscious identity. Come primarily for the people and atmosphere rather than expecting a formal dinner. The surrounding Jordaan neighborhood provides plenty of restaurants if you want to eat before or after your visit.

Café Saarein currently opens from 4 pm on Wednesday through Sunday and is closed on Monday and Tuesday. Closing time is generally 1 am on Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday, and 2 am on Friday and Saturday. Hours and events may change, so consult the official website before setting out.

For gay travelers, Saarein provides access to a side of Amsterdam’s queer life that is less commercial and more connected to the city’s activist history. It is not a venue built specifically around gay male nightlife, and that is precisely why it can be interesting. Respect the space, leave room for its core community and enjoy a drink in one of Amsterdam’s most meaningful queer institutions.
