La Cueva, "the cave," is one of the oldest and most storied gay venues in Lima, an underground disco in a modest, garage-like building in the San Borja district that recently marked more than two decades on the scene. A subterranean paradise and a great place to start or end a Lima night out, it's open weekends only and draws a friendly, largely older and bear-popular crowd of "hombres de verdad," who come for the dancing, the go-go boys and, above all, a fabulous roster of drag queens who own the stage. Down-to-earth, local, and welcoming, with cheap entry that includes a drink after midnight, it's a genuine Lima institution; just grab a taxi, as it's about 15 minutes from Miraflores.
