Portas Largas ("Wide Doors") is a Lisbon institution, a former Portuguese tasca in the heart of Bairro Alto that's kept its old-world charm, marble tables, and azulejos while becoming one of the gay scene's classic first stops of the night. Long a fixture of queer Bairro Alto and happily mixed, it's known for big, cheap caipirinhas served in plastic cups so you can spill out and mingle on the packed street, with a soundtrack from fado to dance and live music on Saturdays. Opening early (around 5pm), warm and international, it's the natural place to start a night out.
