El Purgatorio

El Purgatorio is San Juan's bear bar, reborn in December 2023 as an exclusively bear-focused venue in Santurce and run by the team behind Puerto Rico Bear Events. It gave the island's bear and leather community a home again after the much-missed Bear Tavern closed during the pandemic, and it's quickly become the go-to for bears, cubs, and their admirers. Dark, loud, and unpretentiously dive-y, popular with locals and refreshingly off the tourist track, it packs its calendar with theme nights—"Freaky Fridays," "Woof Night," and bear, leather, and pup parties—with DJs and dancing. Open Fridays and Saturdays with more nights on the way, it's a welcoming, no-frills spot to dig into the real local scene, so brush up on your Spanish and settle in.
