The Pipeworks - Glasgow

The Pipeworks is Glasgow’s only dedicated gay sauna and one of Scotland’s largest men’s health and leisure clubs. Located at 5 Metropole Lane in the city centre, it occupies three floors devoted to relaxation, socializing and decidedly more intimate encounters. The venue first opened in the mid-2000s and underwent an extensive £400,000 refurbishment in 2019, which modernized its facilities and added a new floor. Its central location, broad range of equipment and long weekend opening make it a familiar destination for local gay men as well as visitors exploring Glasgow’s queer scene.

The ground floor provides the main entrance, lift access, a disabled toilet and several private rooms. It also contains a cinema and recreational area showing adult entertainment. Reception and the principal changing facilities are located on the first floor, where guests receive a locker and can get ready for their visit. Towels are normally provided, while flip-flops and blankets may be available on request. Bringing your own suitable footwear can nevertheless be useful, particularly if you plan to move frequently between the wet and cruising areas.

The first floor is home to the main wellness facilities. These include showers, a steam room with space for approximately 25 men and a large heated spa pool capable of accommodating around 30 guests. A licensed café-bar provides drinks and a more sociable setting for taking a break or starting a conversation before exploring further. Free Wi-Fi, an internet area and an outdoor smoking space are also available. The bar remains open later on Friday and Saturday nights, giving the weekend sessions a more social atmosphere than the traditional towel-and-silence sauna experience.

Upstairs, the mood becomes darker and considerably more playful. The second floor contains a dry sauna for around 20 men, additional showers, toilets, rest areas and a cruising maze. There are public and private themed rooms, darker recreational spaces and a television lounge. Renovated private cabins can also be booked as an upgrade. Depending on the cabin, features may include smart-lock access, adjustable lighting, adult television, electrical sockets and USB charging points. Standard admission does not necessarily include a private cabin, so check the current supplements at reception.

The Pipeworks opens from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, and from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Wednesday. It then operates continuously from Friday at 11 a.m. until Sunday at 11 p.m., making it particularly convenient after a night out or for anyone whose idea of Sunday relaxation requires something livelier than brunch. Opening hours, admission prices and special offers can change, so consult the official website or social media before visiting. Membership is optional, but members usually receive a lower admission price.

The venue is for adult men and valid photographic identification may be required. As in every cruising environment, consent is essential: interest should never be assumed, and a clear “no” must always be respected. The number and mix of visitors vary by hour, with weekend nights generally offering the liveliest atmosphere.
