The name may suggest a stop on the journey to Heaven, but this compact venue has developed a personality and loyal following entirely of its own.

The establishment is divided into two contrasting spaces. Upstairs feels like a traditional British pub, with a central bar, reasonably casual surroundings and a lively mix of regulars, tourists and theatre-goers. It is an easy place to meet friends for a pint, enjoy an after-work drink or begin a gay night out in central London. Downstairs, the mood becomes decidedly more theatrical. The basement cabaret bar hosts drag queens, singers, comedy, games and audience participation throughout the week.

Halfway to Heaven describes itself as offering cabaret seven days a week, although performers, formats and stage times change. Regular programming includes Mother Tucking Tuesdays, Miss Penny’s combination of songs, cards, laughs and prizes on Wednesdays, rotating Thursday shows or karaoke, multi-performer cabaret on Fridays, long Saturday afternoon and evening line-ups, and Sunday sessions. The room can become busy during popular shows, particularly on Fridays and Saturdays. Since the venue does not accept bookings or reserve areas, arriving early is the sensible strategy if standing behind several tall men is not your preferred form of audience participation.
