Interbelt Nite Club

Known today as The Belt, and still widely remembered by its historic name, Interbelt Nite Club is one of the longest-standing LGBTQ+ nightlife institutions in Akron. Located at 70 North Howard Street, the club occupies a converted mid-20th-century movie theater whose walls have witnessed several chapters of the city’s entertainment history. For decades, Interbelt has provided local gay, lesbian, bi, trans and queer communities with a place to dance, watch drag performances and enjoy a night out without having to travel north to Cleveland.

The venue is larger than the average neighborhood gay bar. Its former theater layout provides room for a spacious dance floor, a stage, several social areas and an outdoor patio. The atmosphere depends heavily on the event being held that evening. Some nights focus on dancing and DJ sets, while others feature drag shows, themed parties, Latin music or appearances by guest entertainers. The crowd can also change from one event to another, ranging from longtime LGBTQ+ regulars to students, younger clubbers and straight allies.

Drag has played an important role in Interbelt’s history. Local performers have developed their acts on its stage, while nationally recognized queens have also appeared at the club. Previous guests have included performers associated with RuPaul’s Drag Race, helping establish the venue as an important stop for drag entertainment in Northeast Ohio. The building itself adds a distinctive character. Before becoming a nightclub, it operated as the Ritz Theatre and hosted movies as well as live entertainment. Ray Charles is among the artists reported to have performed there during the building’s earlier life. Much of the surrounding historic district disappeared during the construction of Akron’s Innerbelt freeway, leaving the venue as an unusual survivor of the old North Howard Street entertainment scene. The name Interbelt is therefore more than a nightclub label: it connects the club to the changing urban history around it.

Visitors should expect the informal, high-energy atmosphere of a longstanding regional nightclub rather than a polished designer lounge. Come ready to dance, socialize and enjoy the show. Admission charges may apply, particularly for drag performances and special events, and drinks are purchased separately. The Belt is not located in a large, walkable gay district comparable to those found in Chicago or New York. Akron’s queer nightlife is spread across a small number of venues, making each surviving LGBTQ+ space particularly meaningful to the local community. The club is close to downtown Akron and a short drive from restaurants, hotels and other nightlife options. Travelers staying farther away may find a taxi or rideshare service more convenient, especially late at night.

The club currently appears to operate mainly on selected weekend nights, often opening around 10 p.m. and continuing until approximately 2 a.m. Do not rely on older listings showing a full week of themed events: the schedule has evolved over the years.
