Cesar’s Killer Margaritas is a lively Mexican restaurant and cocktail destination in Chicago’s Lakeview East neighborhood, an area closely connected with the city’s LGBTQ+ history and nightlife. Travelers should note that the former location at 3166 North Clark Street has permanently closed. The surviving restaurant is now found at 2924 North Broadway, near the corner of Broadway and Oakdale. It remains close to Boystown, also known as Northalsted, making it a convenient place for gay visitors to begin an evening before heading toward the neighborhood’s bars and clubs.

The restaurant’s story reaches back to the early 1990s, when Cesar and his son Israel Sanchez opened their first establishment on Clark Street. According to local history, the memorable “Killer Margaritas” name appeared after a tattoo artist sampled one of the drinks and declared it killer. The same artist created Manny, the skeletal mascot that became part of the restaurant’s visual identity. The Broadway branch followed in 2001 and eventually became the brand’s main home.

As the name promises, margaritas are the stars of the show. The selection normally includes more than twenty flavors, available frozen or on the rocks, with different rim options and formats ranging from individual cocktails to enormous drinks made for sharing. Fruit-forward combinations may feature strawberry, mango, guava, watermelon, hibiscus or dragon fruit, while guests who prefer a more classic approach can order a traditional lime version. These cocktails are known for being generous, so pacing yourself is wise—especially if Northalsted’s dance floors are next on the itinerary. When a restaurant puts “killer” in the name, consider it both branding and a friendly warning.

The restaurant’s mole sauce is based on a family recipe handed down through several generations, combining roasted chiles, spices, nuts and chocolate. The atmosphere is colorful, casual and celebration-oriented rather than intimate or sophisticated. Guests can eat in the main dining room, watch the neighborhood from the covered all-season patio or explore the upstairs Una Más Lounge when it is operating. Music, themed celebrations and occasional events can make the experience considerably louder later in the day. It works well for birthdays, groups of friends, relaxed dates and pre-party dinners, but anyone hoping for a quiet romantic meal should choose an earlier period.

Cesar’s is not an exclusively gay restaurant, yet its relationship with Chicago’s LGBTQ+ community is genuine. The Pride parade passes directly along Broadway, and the business has supported Pride-related initiatives and LGBTQ+ healthcare organizations. The clientele is mixed, friendly and accustomed to the neighborhood’s diversity. Gay couples and groups should feel completely at ease here without the restaurant needing to manufacture a rainbow identity.
