Niko Niko's is a Houston institution, a Greek café that's been feeding the Montrose community, the city's gayborhood, since 1977, when it started as a walk-up window that took $15 on its first day. Set in a converted service station with slanted floors and tables crammed together, this bustling, counter-service hole-in-the-wall turns out an astonishing amount of food to a diverse, always-crowded following: some of the best gyros in town, moist lamb in a plush warm pita with sweet onions and creamy tzatziki, plus falafel, char-grilled lemon-oregano pork chops, a splendid Greek salad, and famous award-winning skin-on fries. Casual, friendly, and quick, and within walking distance of many of Houston's LGBTQ+ bars and clubs, it's a beloved neighborhood landmark and a perfect fuel stop before or after a night out.
