Bermuda's first ever gay pride parade will take place August 31, 2019 at Victoria Park in Hamilton on the beautiful island of Bermuda. This pride event takes place almost a year after re-legalizing same-sex marriage, and twenty-five years after the historic Stubbs Bill became operative, decriminalizing same sex relationships in this British Overseas Territory in the North Atlantic Ocean.
Bermuda Pride 2019 is organized by equal rights campaigners and sponsored by charitable organization OutBermuda. Talking to local newspaper The Royal Gazette, a spokesperson for OutBermuda said: “There is an inherent value in a public celebration of our LGBTQ community in Bermuda as a reminder that we exist and that we are members of the Bermuda community. “It is also a beacon of hope to LGBTQ youth and others who feel that they are alone.”
Gay couple, Winston and Greg Godwin-DeRoche, were the first couple to win marriage recognition in Bermuda after they brought their case to the Supreme Court. This resulted in the original legalization of same-sex marriage in the country in 2017. The Bermudian government re-banned same-sex marriage a year later, before it was legalized again in November 2018.
