Exit Café: late-night gay partying in Amsterdam’s rainbow street

Exit Café is a lively gay bar and dance venue located at 42 Reguliersdwarsstraat, one of the most famous LGBTQ+ nightlife streets in Amsterdam. Occupying the ground floor of the same building as Club NYX, it operates as a separate venue with its own atmosphere, crowd and entertainment. The formula is delightfully uncomplicated: upbeat music, energetic bartenders, cheeky shots, karaoke, dancing and a party that continues long after some of the neighboring bars have closed.

The interior follows what the venue calls an “Après Chique” style. Think of a playful alpine lodge transported into the middle of Amsterdam’s queer nightlife district, then supplied with DJs, pop anthems and considerably more glitter. The décor is casual rather than sophisticated, and the relatively compact space creates an intimate, energetic atmosphere when it fills up. Exit Café is not the address for a quiet craft cocktail accompanied by a detailed explanation of twelve botanical ingredients. It is the place to sing along, dance close to strangers and discover that your ability to perform a pop chorus improves dramatically after midnight.

Music generally includes accessible dance tracks, international house and familiar pop favorites. A DJ plays every night, while karaoke and themed promotions appear regularly in the program. The musical approach is intentionally crowd-friendly rather than underground. Visitors looking for experimental techno or a serious warehouse experience may prefer one of Amsterdam’s dedicated electronic clubs. Exit Café is better suited to anyone who wants recognizable songs, a social atmosphere and a dance floor without the scale or ceremony of a major nightclub.

The crowd is LGBTQ+ and mixed, with plenty of gay men as well as women, queer visitors, local regulars, tourists and straight friends. It is not a men-only venue, nor does it enforce a particular dress code or body type. The mood is generally informal, flirtatious and inclusive. You can arrive with a group, but the compact bar and busy dance floor also make it reasonably easy for solo travelers to start conversations. As always, friendliness does not replace consent: respect other guests, their space and their signals.

Exit Café tends to become busiest later at night, particularly when other venues in Reguliersdwarsstraat begin to wind down. Early in the evening, it can work as a casual place for a beer or a first drink. After midnight, the energy rises and the bar can become crowded. If you dislike queues or tightly packed dance floors, arriving earlier is the sensible move. On popular weekends, Pride celebrations and major city events, expect a much busier experience.

The venue is centrally located within walking distance of Rembrandtplein and not far from Amsterdam’s historic canal belt. Numerous tram and metro connections are available nearby, although late-night schedules should be checked in advance. Cycling after several drinks is not the charming local experience some visitors imagine, so use public transportation, a taxi or walk back to your accommodation when practical.

Exit Café currently advertises late opening every night, until 4 am from Sunday through Thursday and until 5 am on Friday and Saturday. Opening times, karaoke sessions and special events can change, so checking its official channels before visiting remains advisable.

For gay travelers looking for an easygoing, unapologetically fun night in central Amsterdam, Exit Café remains a reliable stop. It is social, accessible and proudly unpretentious: part chalet, part karaoke party and part late-night refuge for everyone who is not yet ready to go home.
