Cruise Bar Yumbo: bears, leather and after-dark encounters in Maspalomas

Located on the second floor of the Yumbo Centrum in Playa del Inglés, Cruise Bar is one of the longest-running gay men’s venues in Maspalomas. Open since 1994, it describes itself as the first bear and leather bar in the Canary Islands. Cruise Bar combines a social drinking space with an extensive cruising area. The main bar provides a relatively easy place to begin the evening, order a drink and observe the crowd before venturing farther inside. Beyond it, visitors will find corridors, private cabins, glory holes, slings, a video area, labyrinth-style passages and dark rooms. There is also a smoking area. The facilities make it much more sexually charged than a conventional gay bar, so travellers looking only for cocktails, conversation and pop music should know what kind of venue they are entering.

The venue currently advertises daily opening hours from approximately 10 p.m. until 4 a.m. In Maspalomas, however, “opening time” and “the moment when things actually become interesting” are not always the same event. Arriving around 10 p.m. makes it easier to explore the layout and have a conversation at the bar. Those seeking a busier cruising atmosphere will generally prefer later hours, particularly at weekends and during major LGBTQ+ events.

Cruise Bar occupies part of the Yumbo Centrum, the open-air shopping complex that becomes the heart of gay nightlife in Gran Canaria after sunset. Its upper-level location can be slightly confusing for first-time visitors because the Yumbo’s staircases seem to follow their own dramatic logic. Look for the venue on the second floor and check its social media before visiting for any schedule changes or themed nights.

Consent and personal boundaries remain essential throughout the cruising area. A look or a friendly approach is never an obligation, and a clear “no” should always be respected immediately. Visitors should also keep drinks in sight, protect valuables and make their own informed safer-sex choices.

Cruise Bar is best suited to adult gay men who want something more provocative than an ordinary terrace bar but less formal than a ticketed fetish club.
