Mantrix

Mantrix is one of the biggest names on the gay nightlife scene in Maspalomas and a classic final stop for anyone determined to dance until sunrise. Located on the fourth floor of the famous Yumbo Centrum in Playa del Inglés, this late-night gay club comes alive when many of the surrounding bars are beginning to wind down. Its usual opening hours are from 2 am to 6 am every night, so there is no need to arrive before the rest of the Yumbo has warmed you up. In Gran Canaria, bedtime is clearly just a suggestion.

The Yumbo Centrum may look like an ordinary open-air shopping complex during the day, but after dark it becomes the beating heart of LGBTQ+ life in the south of the island. Its different levels are filled with cocktail terraces, cabaret venues, cruise bars and dance clubs. Mantrix occupies a prime position at the top of this wonderfully queer maze. Take the stairs or lift to the fourth floor and follow the sound of house music—or simply follow the stream of handsome men heading in the same direction.

Inside, the atmosphere is energetic, dark and unapologetically club-focused. The soundtrack leans towards international house and electronic dance music, usually mixed by resident or guest DJs. Do not expect a quiet lounge where you can spend the evening discussing your hiking plans for the next morning. Mantrix is designed for dancing, flirting and squeezing every last drop out of a Maspalomas night. The dance floor becomes increasingly busy after 3 am, particularly on Fridays, Saturdays and during the island’s major LGBTQ+ events.

The crowd is predominantly gay and male, although the club presents itself as an LGBTQ+ venue and attracts a varied mix of queer visitors. You will meet holidaymakers from across Europe, local residents, seasonal workers and regular Gran Canaria devotees who seem to know every bartender by name. Ages, body types and nationalities mix easily, reflecting the international character of Maspalomas itself. The mood can be cruisy and flirtatious, but it remains first and foremost a nightclub where music and dancing take centre stage.

Mantrix also has an outdoor terrace, useful when you need some fresh air, a conversation without shouting or a strategic look around before returning to the dance floor. For those interested in something more adventurous, the club includes a cruising area with a dark room and private cabins. Participation is entirely optional: you can spend the whole night dancing without entering this part of the venue. As always in intimate spaces, respect, clear consent and safer-sex precautions are essential.

Admission generally includes one drink, although prices, special events and door policies can change. During Maspalomas Pride in May, Winter Pride in November and other major party weeks, Mantrix can become particularly crowded and may open earlier for special events. Check the club’s social media before going if you want the latest programme. Arriving at around 3 am usually gives you the full experience, while weekend queues mean that a little patience may be required.

Mantrix is not the place for an early cocktail or a peaceful date. It is where the date goes after the cocktails have worked their magic. Come ready for strong beats, an international gay crowd and a very late night at one of Gran Canaria’s most established LGBTQ+ clubs. Comfortable shoes are recommended—though judging by the dance floor, they are certainly not compulsory.
