Two Brewers

-
114 Clapham High St, SW4 7UJ, London, United Kingdom

The Two Brewers is one of London’s most famous LGBTQ+ venues and a true institution of gay nightlife south of the Thames. Located on Clapham High Street, just a short walk from Clapham North and Clapham Common stations, this legendary bar and club has been serving the community since 1981. While many visitors automatically head to Soho for their first gay night out in London, The Two Brewers proves that some of the capital’s most entertaining queer evenings happen in Clapham.

The venue is particularly renowned for its drag cabaret, with live entertainment scheduled seven nights a week. Depending on the evening, the program may include established drag queens, rising performers, karaoke, quizzes, themed events, live vocalists or gloriously camp competitions. The exact lineup changes regularly, so checking the official calendar before heading out is recommended. Some weeknights offer free admission before a stated time, while special shows and busy weekend sessions may require an entrance fee or advance ticket.

The Two Brewers combines several experiences under one roof. Its show bar provides the main stage for cabaret and drag performances, creating a lively, interactive atmosphere where audience participation is never entirely off the table. At weekends, the club area comes into its own, with DJs playing pop anthems, dance tracks and unapologetically queer crowd-pleasers until late. Friday and Saturday nights generally attract the biggest crowds and continue until around 4 am, making the Brewers a good choice for anyone who wants more than a quick drink.

The crowd is predominantly LGBTQ+ and often heavily gay male, although the venue welcomes the whole community and its allies. Expect a broad mix of ages, styles and backgrounds: local regulars, groups celebrating birthdays, drag devotees, students, tourists and men who simply came for one drink before mysteriously finding themselves on the dance floor three hours later. The mood is generally sociable, unpretentious and very British, with enough glitter and innuendo to prevent the evening from ever becoming too respectable.

This is more of an entertainment-led gay bar and nightclub than a cruising venue. Flirting certainly happens, but the emphasis is on shows, music, dancing and communal fun rather than dark rooms or an overtly sexual atmosphere. Solo visitors can still enjoy the performances, although the venue becomes crowded at peak times and the energy is often best suited to those ready to join the party.

The Two Brewers is strictly for guests aged 18 and over, and a physical photo ID is required for entry. Images stored on a phone may not be accepted. Flip-flops and sliders are prohibited, dogs are permitted only until 10 pm, and final admission is normally one hour before closing. The venue includes an accessible toilet, a smoking area and bookable spaces.

Whether you come for midweek karaoke, a sharp-tongued drag queen or a full Saturday night of cabaret and clubbing, The Two Brewers delivers a wonderfully traditional London gay night out. It may be located outside Soho, but it is anything but secondary: this Clapham institution remains loud, welcoming, proudly queer and gloriously difficult to leave early.
