Jo’s Coffee (South Congress)

-
1300 South Congress Ave, 78704, Austin, United States

Every gay-friendly city has that one coffee spot where getting caffeinated turns into a whole social event, and in Austin, that spot is Jo's Coffee on South Congress. It's not trying to be your typical grab-and-go coffee shop, and honestly, nobody who visits wants it to be.

Perched right on the corner of James and South Congress, this funky little coffee shack has become one of the most recognizable stops in South Austin, and it shares a parking lot with Hotel San José, one of the city's most beloved gay-friendly boutique hotels. That's not a coincidence, it's practically a package deal. Grab your coffee, wander over for a frosé in the hotel's leafy courtyard, and suddenly your morning caffeine run has turned into an entire afternoon you didn't plan for but definitely don't regret.

The drink everyone orders, and the one you should absolutely try, is the Iced Turbo, a chocolate and hazelnut flavored iced coffee that's become something of a local legend. Order one, find a spot on the outdoor seating, and do what everyone else on South Congress is doing: people watching. This stretch of Austin is packed with funky boutiques and chic little shops, so there's always something happening just beyond your table, and Jo's has front row seats to all of it.

And then there's the mural. If you've spent five minutes on Instagram scrolling through Austin content, you've already seen it: the "I love you so much" painted across the side of the building. It's become one of the most photographed walls in the city, and yes, you're absolutely allowed to take the selfie, everyone does, and nobody's judging.

Beyond the coffee and the photo op, Jo's has built a real neighborhood following. Breakfast tacos, fresh pastries, and a full food menu keep people around past their first cup, and weekends bring live music brunch, turning a simple coffee stop into the kind of lazy, sun-soaked morning that Austin does better than almost anywhere. It's dog-friendly too, so if you're traveling with a furry plus-one, nobody's going to blink twice.

What makes Jo's genuinely worth building into your day, rather than just passing through for a quick cup, is how naturally it fits into an LGBTQ+-friendly stretch of the city. This part of South Congress isn't just cute for the sake of it, it's dotted with queer-friendly shops and spots that make the whole area feel easy and welcoming, from leather goods and vintage fashion to modern menswear just a few doors down. Coffee here is basically the starting point for a morning that naturally rolls into shopping, people watching, and eventually a proper day out.

So whether you're staying nearby and need your first coffee of the day, or you're making a point of hitting South Congress during your Austin trip, put Jo's on the list. It's low-key, a little iconic, and exactly the kind of place where a fifteen minute coffee stop turns into two hours you're genuinely happy you lost.

Bottom line: come for the Iced Turbo, stay for the mural selfie, and don't be surprised if you end up ordering a second cup just to keep people watching a little longer.
