Austin is a city in a state of permanent self-reinvention, and the gay community here has been part of that reinvention for decades. I have been to Austin three times, and the October visit gave me the most accurate picture of what daily life in gay Austin actually looks like: the 6th Street entertainment district, Rainey Street, the Red River Cultural District, and a community genuinely integrated into the broader Austin creative and tech economy. The 4th Street gay strip is the traditional centre and still active, but the scene has dispersed across the city in ways that reflect Austin's extraordinary growth. Texas has not been a progressive state on LGBTQ+ legislation at the state level, but Austin has maintained a protective municipal posture. The live music infrastructure, the food truck culture, Barton Springs Pool in summer: Austin does a lot of things well and the gay scene benefits from all of them. Austin Pride in August is a major regional event. The South Congress Avenue strip, the East Austin restaurant corridor, and the Lake Travis swimming holes all feature in the gay social geography of a city that does daily life extremely well. The bats under the Congress Avenue Bridge, the Barton Creek Greenbelt swimming holes, the Hamilton Pool preserve west of the city: Austin's outdoor culture is central to understanding why the gay community here is so invested in the place.
