Cliff's Variety

-
479 Castro St, San Francisco, United States

On Castro Street, right in the pulsing heart of San Francisco's gay neighborhood, Cliff's Variety has quietly outlasted just about everything else in the city, and this year it's celebrating a full 90 years in business. Founded in 1936, decades before the Castro became the gay mecca it's known as today, Cliff's has watched the neighborhood transform around it while somehow staying exactly, gloriously itself.

Calling it a hardware store undersells the experience entirely. Yes, you can find tools, screws, and everything else a home project genuinely requires, and yes, the staff actually know where every single thing is buried in the beautifully chaotic aisles. But wander a little further and you'll hit costume supplies capable of outfitting an entire Mardi Gras krewe, disco balls, craft materials, party goods, kitchenware, gifts, and a rotating cast of oddities you didn't know you needed until you saw them. It's split across two adjoining storefronts with no interior door connecting them, so shopping both sides means checking out twice, a quirky little detail that longtime regulars have simply learned to love.

For gay visitors to the Castro, Cliff's isn't just a place to grab batteries or a birthday card, it's become something closer to the neighborhood's general store, the kind of place where you run in for one thing and leave with three you never expected, plus a genuine conversation with staff who've probably worked there for years. The current owners are direct descendants of the founder, and that family-run continuity shows in the level of service: attentive, knowledgeable, and completely unpretentious.

Cliff's has also become a quiet fixture of Castro community life beyond retail. The store regularly hosts fundraisers for local causes like the Harvey Milk Civil Rights Academy, and this year's 90th anniversary party came complete with live music and a drag show, a fitting way to mark nine decades in a neighborhood built on exactly that kind of joyful, unpretentious celebration.

If you're spending time in the Castro, Cliff's Variety deserves a stop, not because it's flashy, but because it's the real thing: a genuine, beloved neighborhood institution that's been quietly essential for almost a century. Pair a visit with LGBTQ+-friendly accommodation nearby through misterb&b, and you'll get a small taste of what makes the Castro feel like an actual community rather than just a nightlife strip.
