Daniel and Clinton live on the beautiful Mediterranean island of Malta, south of Sicily. With year-round sun, stunning beaches and breathtaking history, this very gay-friendly country has the whole package (and it's been featured heavily in Games of Thrones.) Here are this gay couple’s top tips to making the most of Malta!
How gay-friendly is Malta?
Malta has been ranked as the most LGBTIQ-friendly country in Europe, according to the ILGA Europe Rainbow index. Legislation in Malta grants same-sex couples the right to marry and adopt, and discrimination on sexual orientation is legally protected. Individuals can also choose their own gender, be it ‘male’, ‘female’ or ‘X’ on official state documents. In general, the Maltese public are very open, understanding and welcoming to LGBTIQ individuals!

What are the best gay events in Malta?
The largest event is Malta Pride, this year on Saturday 15 September. It’s held in Valletta, which is also the 2018 European Capital of Culture. This year’s theme is 'Pride in the Heart of the Mediterranean': we want to be a beacon of hope for our neighboring countries whose LGBTIQ rights are not so advanced as here in Malta. We truly believe that Malta can act as an example for other states and islands.
We only have 48 hours in Malta. What can’t we miss?
It depends on your taste, but the capital Valletta is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Wander in the charming streets and cafés of Mdina and Vittoriosa, then take some time to relax in Golden Bay.
A quick visit to our sister island Gozo is a dream, as time stands still here. Of course, the megalithic temples known to be the oldest standing structure in the world, the Hypogeum, Ghar Dalam and the numerous catacombs are a must if you’re into archaeology!

What’s your favorite gay place to grab a bite for lunch?
Since in Malta being gay is mainstream, there’s no real “gay place” to go eating – LGBTIQ people are welcome anywhere and everywhere! Valletta is packed with bars and restaurants that are full of character.
A gay place for brunch on weekends?
Again, there are no gay-specific diners, but you could visit Zurrieq Valley for a quick brunch and spectacular views, and then go and explore the Blue Grotto’s stunning sea caverns! Alternatively, enjoy a sumptuous seafood lunch at Marsaxlokk fishing village; try Terrone or Tartarun for the best fresh catch of the day.

Best gay place and day for a cheap beer or happy hour?
Since in Malta being gay is mainstream, LGBTIQ people are welcome anywhere. There are a number of small bars and open air restaurants in Zurrieq Valley. The prices in this area are relatively cheap. But if you really want a good beer at a very cheap price, you should visit the village kazin (local club). All the towns and villages in Malta have one and it's usually found near the parish church.
We’re ready to party! What are the best gay clubs?
Michelangelo is one of the most popular gay bars in the heart of the clubbing scene in St.Julian’s. Other regular gay events are announced on gaymalta.com or www.facebook.com/s2sevents.
Any beaches, parks or best other places to chill-out?
Golden Bay and Cafe Del Mar are two nice places. Also, relax at the gay-friendly secluded beach of Riviera Bay and then go for a walk over the clay hill: you’ll be surprised to find another beach behind these cliffs, more know to the locals as il-Gnejna Bay, which together with Pembroke pebbles beach are the unofficial nudist and gay beaches in Malta.

Can you share a secret or little-known place to visit in Malta?
Swim in the pristine waters of Fomm ir-Rih Bay. You’ll need to rent a car or bike to get there, then walk down a little narrow passage way to get to this wonderful bay. Take food and drinks and a beach umbrella with you as there are no services.

Finally, where can we get the best view in Malta?
If you like city views it has to be at Sliema, overlooking Valletta: sunrise is stunning. In Valletta itself, don’t miss the view of the Grand Harbour from Upper Barrakka Gardens. You can catch an amazing sunset in the sea from Dingli Cliffs or Golden Bay. Finally, if you like panoramas, the view from Nadur (Gozo) over the channel is spectacular as you can see Gozo, Malta and Comino – the three main Maltese islands! ●
