Gay Local Tips in Lisbon

Get lost in Lisbon

Meet Rui! He's one of our superhosts in Lisbon. Learn more about the best activities to fill your schedule with in the capital of Portugal - one of the most gay-friendly and lively spots in Europe. Explore the world. Experience your Pride.

How gay-friendly is your city? What is gay life like there?

Lisbon is a very friendly city. Overall, Portugal is very tolerant and the gay community will for sure feel safe and welcome everywhere they go. Most of the bars are gay-friendly but there is a specific area in the city where the majority of gay bars and clubs are located. There are two main gay events each year, both of which are extremely popular: Lisbon Bear Pride (very famous for its Tagus River Cruise) and Gay Pride.

We only have 48 hours in your city. What can’t we miss?

First, walk around the center. The city is not that big but walking around can get very challenging since it is settled over seven hills. In Lisbon, you are always going up or down. Sintra should not be missed either and it is only 40 minutes away by train. Walking along the riverbank till the Belém district is a must too.

What’s your favourite gay place to grab a bite for lunch? A nice dinner?

For lunch, pick any restaurant with a nice terrace in the center and appreciates the city's great al-fresco culture. For dinner I would recommend Trivial, it’s pretty close to the gay bars - so much so you only need to cross the street or go next door!

A gay place for brunch on weekends?

Late Night Birds Hotel. This is definitely the best place for a Sunday brunch, and the venue is exquisite!

Best gay place and day for a cheap beer or happy hour?

Happy hour at Shelter or Tr3s Bar. Tr3s opens at 4pm and has a nice terrace. It gets crowded everyday, and is your best chance when it comes to mingling with the locals.

We’re ready to party! What are the best gay clubs?

Trumps and Construction although the first has a younger crowd. Finalmente is the oldest gay club and has drag shows every single day. It’s small, but always packed and definitely popular.

What are the best alternative gay bars and clubs where you live?

Go for a drink at Purex, where you will find great music and a very mixed population. While Purex is not specifically gay, it's very gay-friendly.

Can you share a secret or little-known place to visit in your city?

I would recommend creating your own secret spot in the city. Lisbon may surprise you around each corner, so just get lost and be charmed by the city's hidden gems!

Any beaches, parks or best other places to chill out?

Chill out by the river, and if you want to enjoy the beach, cross the bridge where you have a fantastic coastline of white sandy beaches for kilometers. Otherwise just hop on a train to Cascais. This is about a 30-minute train ride from the city centre and offers a relaxed atmosphere, along with a pretty great patch of beach.

Where can we get the best view of Lisbon?

Lisbon has several sightseeing spots, some of them with amazing gardens to chill out in. Going up to the city's main castle is a great choice for example. ●
