Rua do Cardal de Sao Jose is a picturesque and narrow street lined up with traditional buildings, typical of the Portuguese architecture. Cars can barely drive there, making our street very quiet day and night (Lisbon is generally speaking a very loud and noisy city, making that a bit of a luxury here in the center of the city!). Being only 2 minutes away from the famous Avenida da Libertade (and Avenida metro station), it's also very central. A pleasant and short stroll along the Avenida and it's luxury stores, historical buildings, prestigious hotels, opera houses, theaters, kiosks, gardens and beautiful mosaic pavements will lead you in about 10/15 minutes to : Praca do Comercio, Rua Augusta, Parque Eduardo VII, Marquis de Pombal square and Torel, Restauradores square (the corner stone of Baixa). Rossio historic train station, where you might catch a train for a day trip to Sintra, Caiscais or Estoril. Chiado and Principe Real. Castelo/Alfama and Mouraria districts. Bairo Alto, a stomping ground of lively bars and restaurants. The mix in our neighbourhood is also quite amazing : there is a tiny old school fish monger and and a century old leitaria (selling milk and butter) 5 mns away, and Vuiton, Cartier, Prada or Miu Miu (and so on!) stores only a stone thrown away! The many restaurants, bars, galleries, shops, theaters and museums to choose from within a 15 minutes radium won't leave you with much time on your hands! The area has got everything : From grocery shops to butchers, pharmacies bookstores and gift shops, local cafes and restaurants, local stores, shopping mall and so on... Here are a few things I would recommend in the neighbourhood : Start your morning with a coffee (excellent here in Lisbon!) or a orange juice at a local place (many inexpensive ones around to choose from) or at one of the traditional kiosks along the Avenida da Libertade (good point : thanks to centuries old trees, they stay in the shadow all day long). Ride the Tram 28 for an amazing ride around the city (for just the price of a regular tram ticket). Go to a local place for lunch, and ask for a Bifana (sandwich with a very thin steak inside.
