Metelkova: Slovenia's gay district

Metelkova: Slovenia's gay district

Who would have thought that a district of Slovenia welcomes gay and lesbian tourists with open arms. This is indeed the case in the district of Metelkova. This internationally renowned artistic city is located in the center of the Slovenian capital in Ljubljana.

This district has become over the years the refuge for artists, disabled people as well as gays and lesbians. When you enter the Metelkova district, you feel like you are in another city because the atmosphere is totally different from the rest of the capital.

Metelkova offers its visitors its own unique cultural and event calendar in Slovenia. This destination is undoubtedly the most interesting gay friendly place in Slovenia and for those who like to live their trip beyond the norm.

The gay community in Metelkova dates back to 1993, when a protest movement was born after threats to close down the small artistic district. Thanks in part to pink tourism and community support, this neighborhood has survived after all these years.

Metelkova is home to the few gay and lesbian nightclubs in Ljubljana. You can party at the Klub Tiffany, which attracts a strictly male clientele, and at the Monokel Klub, where gays and lesbians are mixed together.

For gays and lesbians who want to experience an openly gay and underground neighborhood, Metelkova is the place for you.
