The Red Rattler, affectionately known as "The Rat," is one of Sydney's most beloved queer cultural spaces: a community-owned, not-for-profit warehouse theater in Marrickville, founded in 2009 by five local queer artists who wanted a legal, licensed home for alternative arts, performance, and grassroots activism. Named after Sydney's old red rattler trains, the volunteer-run space is fitted with a proper stage, full PA, LED lighting, a projector and screen, a licensed bar and a rooftop garden, and hosts a huge range of queer and alternative events: drag and cabaret, LGBTQIA+ film nights, live music, comedy, undies dance parties and Mardi Gras and Pride-season celebrations. Ethical, affordable and radically inclusive, it's a genuine Inner West institution where creativity, community and queer culture thrive.
